Villas at Disneyland Hotel Honest Review: Duo & Deluxe Studios

Image of deluxe studio at Villas at Disneyland Hotel
While we're used to sprawling complexes across Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort California is delightfully compact. In September 2023, the resort welcomed a sparkling addition to its portfolio: The Villas at Disneyland Hotel.

Housed in the colourful, 12-storey Discovery Tower, this Disney Vacation Club (DVC) property sits  alongside the classic Fantasy, Adventure, and Frontier Towers of the historic Disneyland Hotel. While it's built primarily for DVC members, regular cash guests can book direct or rent DVC points to stay here.

Having experienced the tower's Duo Studio and the standard Deluxe Studio, I've put together an honest review. We'll explore whether Disney's smaller, budget rooms work for international travellers, how the mid-tier Deluxe Studio compares, and what you need to know before shelling out your holiday budget.

⚡ Key Takeaways:
  • Location: Discovery Tower is situated at the back of the Disneyland Hotel footprint, roughly a 7–10 minute stroll through Downtown Disney to the park esplanade or a quick hop on the Monorail.
  • Duo Studios: Ultra-compact at ~250 sq ft, custom-designed for 2 adults (featuring a drop-down queen Murphy bed and a gorgeous The Jungle Book theme). Exceptional value on DVC points, though space is tight.
  • Deluxe Studios: Generous ~372 sq ft spaces sleeping up to 4, styled around The Princess and the Frog or Sleeping Beauty with a full kitchenette.
  • Resort Amenities: Dedicated access to the palette-shaped Palette Pool, Steamboat Willie splash pad, Palm Breeze Bar, and 24-hour fitness centre, on top of classic Disneyland Hotel amenities.

What Are The Villas at Disneyland Hotel?

Lobby at Villas at Disneyland Hotel
The Discovery Tower adds 344 DVC rooms to the Disneyland Hotel grounds. It's only the second DVC property at Disneyland Resort (alongside the Grand Californian's modest villa wing), making point availability in Anaheim far easier than in decades past.

The architectural exterior blends contemporary lines with mid-century Disney modernism. Colour plays a huge part in the design, with the side of the building representing colour palettes from several animated classics.

πŸ’‘The Mouse Observer Tip: If you're booking on cash via Disney Direct, room rates easily top £450–£750 per night. Savvy UK travellers can save hundreds of pounds by renting DVC points through dedicated brokers (such as DVC Rental UK), unlocking villa stays at a fraction of standard rack rates.

The Duo Studio

Inspired by the "Tower Studios" at Disney’s Riviera Resort in Walt Disney World, the Duo Studio is Disney’s answer to multi-functional, modern, compact hotel living. Coming in at around 250 square feet, these rooms are roughly 130 square feet smaller than a standard hotel room. However, Disney has made remarkable use of the floor plan designed for couples.

The Bedroom & Living Space

The visual theme here is entirely dedicated to Walt Disney’s 1967 classic, The Jungle Book. Underfoot, the rug is a striking colour map of the movie. You'll spot vibrant tropical foliage patterns and charming sketch artwork featuring Mowgli, Baloo, and Bagheera.

Instead of a permanent bed frame eating up the floor, the Duo Studio centres on a queen-size pull-down Murphy bed that converts over a daytime two-seater sofa. Unlike old-fashioned sofa beds with thin, springy mattresses, these modern pull-downs feature a proper, high-density residential mattress. You pull down on the handles, and the wall unit glides into place without having to dismantle cushions or rearrange bulky furniture. It's genuinely comfortable and provides solid lumbar support after walking 20,000 steps around California Adventure.

Each bedside ledge includes cubby shelving, standard US plug sockets, and both USB-A and USB-C ports. There's also a secondary bench/mini sofa and a compact moveable stool, offering enough seating for two people to relax without getting under each other's feet.

One interesting perk with some of the Duo Studios is that you get a small balcony, whereas the studios don't have this. I didn't make much use of it, but if you can score a room with a nice view it's good to have the extra sense of space and look over the resort.

In-Room Amenities

Because space is at a premium, the Duo Studio doesn't feature a full kitchenette sink like larger DVC studios. Instead, you get well-organised amenities under the TV:
  • Keurig Single-Cup Coffee Maker: Supplied with standard coffee pods, tea bags, and condiments.
  • Mini-Fridge: Compact under-counter chiller (note: no freezer compartment, so don't buy ice creams to take back to the room).
  • Microwave: Positioned neatly in the cabinetry, ideal for warming up bakery treats or quick snacks.
  • Storage & Tech: A 55-inch wall-mounted 4K Smart TV with casting support, an in-room digital safe, and deep drawers inside the dresser. The entry wardrobe accommodates two medium suitcases and has ample hanging space for shirts and jackets.

The Bathroom

You might assume a micro-room comes with a cramped airline-style bathroom, but Disney did the exact opposite. The Duo Studio bathroom is remarkably spacious:
  • Walk-In Shower: Features floor-to-ceiling tiling, built-in bench seating, a handheld wand, and a rainfall showerhead overhead. Water pressure is superb.
  • Vanity: Large single-basin counter with integrated LED-backlit mirror, makeup ring, and shelves underneath for washbags.
  • Toilet: Tucked into an alcove with custom The Jungle Book artwork hanging overhead.

For couples or solo travellers, the Duo Studio bathroom feels just as luxurious as a room twice its size. There's a quick tour of a Duo Studio on our YouTube page.

πŸ’‘The Mouse Observer Tip: Bookings at the Villas at the Disneyland Hotel (either via DVC points, rental, or cash) don't include tickets. Make sure you book Disneyland tickets and make park reservations ahead of your visit. You can buy tickets in GBP from AttractionTix.

The Deluxe Studio

If you're travelling with children, require two separate beds, or simply prefer having breathing space for two full-sized suitcases, the Deluxe Studio is the traditional option. Sized at roughly 372 square feet, these rooms sleep up to four guests plus one infant in a travel cot.

The Bedroom & Living Space

Deluxe Studios feature dual theming across different floors, inspired by either The Princess and the Frog or Sleeping Beauty. Our Sleeping Beauty room had subtle, royal nods throughout, and the illuminated headboard and rug are movie colour maps.

Like the Duo Studios, artwork is beautiful concept art and sketches that work incredibly well for the design of the room.

The bedding configuration features:
  • One Queen Bed: Standard fixed bed frame raised high off the carpet, providing handy hollow clearance underneath to store bulky suitcases.
  • One Queen-Size Pull-Down Murphy Bed: Folds out from the wall over a plush sofa, revealing custom artwork behind the pillows. Like the Duo Studio, this has a full mattress that's identical in comfort to the fixed bed.
With the Murphy bed closed during the day, the studio feels massive, giving you plenty of floorspace for suitcases and moving around.

In-Room Amenities & Kitchenette

Unlike the Duo Studio's dry counter, the Deluxe Studio features a dedicated kitchenette with:
  • A stainless-steel wet-bar sink and draining area.
  • Under-counter refrigerator and built-in microwave.
  • Keurig coffee maker, toaster, and ceramic bowls and plates.
  • Counter area under TV with two chairs, giving you a dedicated desk or breakfast nook.
This makes having breakfast in your room or reheating takeaways from Tangaroa Terrace remarkably easy.

The Bathroom

The Deluxe Studio bathroom splits off the toilet from the bathroom, and feels luxurious while keeping the colourful accents from the room design:
  • A spacious vanity with lit mirrors and storage.
  • Either a large walk-in glass shower or a combined shower and tub.
  • Full-size wall-mounted Disney Resort Collection toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, and body wash).

If you're bringing a multi-generational group or looking for ultimate luxury, Discovery Tower also houses multi-room villas:
  • 1-Bedroom Villas (Sleeps up to 5): Themed to The Princess and the Frog or Fantasia. Includes a master king bedroom, a full living room with pull-down queen bed and pull-down twin bunk, two full bathrooms, a full kitchen, and an in-unit washer/dryer.
  • 2-Bedroom Villas (Sleeps up to 9): Combines a 1-Bedroom Villa layout with an adjoining studio or second bedroom, offering expansive living space, dining tables, and three full bathrooms.
  • 3-Bedroom Grand Villas (Sleeps up to 12): Spectacular two-storey bi-level suites featuring double-height floor-to-ceiling windows, an outdoor private patio with double-sided fireplace, private en-suite bedrooms, and bespoke Bambi, Frozen, and Moana theming.
  • Garden Units: A small collection of Duo and Deluxe Studios situated poolside with direct patio access, rather than higher up in the tower floors.

Resort Amenities, Pools & Dining

Staying at The Villas gives you the best of both worlds: dedicated new amenities inside Discovery Tower and full access to the historic Disneyland Hotel complex.

The Palette Pool & Steamboat Willie Splash Pad

Discovery Tower has its own pool courtyard anchored by the Palette Pool, an artist-palette shaped swimming area lined with comfortable loungers and daybeds. Families with kids will love the neighbouring Steamboat Willie splash pad. You also have full access to the hotel’s famous E-Ticket Pool and retro Monorail water slides.

Palm Breeze Bar & Dining

Right next to the Palette Pool is the Palm Breeze Bar. Featuring airy Mid-Century Modern architecture inspired by Mary Blair's iconic styling, it serves artisan sharing plates, sourdough pizzas, craft beers, and California cocktails. I had a really great poolside lunch here. For classic dining, you're only a two-minute walk from Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar, Tangaroa Terrace, and Goofy’s Kitchen for character breakfasts.

Fitness & Laundry

Discovery Tower features a brand-new 24-hour fitness centre packed with TechnoGym treadmills, free weights, and weight machines. If you're staying in a Duo or Deluxe Studio without in-room machines, there are also modern self-service laundry facilities on-site payable via smartphone card readers.

Is It Worth It for UK Travellers?

If you're paying cash rack-rates during peak summer or school holidays, dropping £600+ a night on a Duo Studio can feel steep when modern off-site hotels along Harbor Boulevard sit just across the road for £150 a night.

However, if you rent DVC points or want the authentic "Disney bubble" experience in Anaheim, The Villas at Disneyland Hotel are sensational. The quality of finishes, the clever Murphy bed engineering, the serene pool area, and the ability to stroll straight into Downtown Disney make it one of the absolute best places to stay across Disney's global resorts.
