Hong Kong Disneyland boasts three official resort hotels hugging the South China Sea. While the flagship Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel serves up grand, Victorian-era luxury (at an equally grand price tag), most UK travellers find themselves weighing up the resort's other two fantastic options: Disney Explorers Lodge and Disney’s Hollywood Hotel.
Are you after Animal Kingdom Lodge-esque immersion, or vibrant, freshly refurbished Art Deco Marvel or classic character rooms? Here's my honest comparison of Disney Explorers Lodge vs Disney's Hollywood Hotel, along with everything you need to know about booking smoothly from the UK.
- The Vibe: Explorers Lodge feels like Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge merged with Wilderness Lodge and the Polynesian; Hollywood Hotel is a stylish, retro Art Deco resort packed with classic animation and Marvel pop-art.
- Room Specs: Explorers Lodge offers slightly larger rooms (around 37 sq m) that sleep up to 4 adults across four distinctly themed wings. Hollywood Hotel features newly refurbished, punchy "Mickey and Friends" and "Marvel" themed rooms.
- Pricing: Disney’s Hollywood Hotel is consistently the most affordable on-site option (often £140–£190/night), while Explorers Lodge sits comfortably in the mid-to-upscale bracket (£180–£280/night).
- Booking from the UK: You don't have to book solely direct in HKD. Third-party authorised platforms like Klook, Booking.com, and Trip.com frequently offer heavily discounted rates and GBP checkout without foreign transaction fees.
Theming & Resort Atmosphere
Stepping into Disney Explorers Lodge feels like an adventure into the golden age of 1920s exploration. Built under the motto "ad explorandum et somniandum" (to explore and to dream), the lobby features an enormous ceiling with natural materials and chandeliers, bamboo columns, and safari theming. Much like Animal Kingdom Lodge, there's a bridge in front of huge glass windows that open up to lush, tropical gardens (with over 700 species of plants).
The grounds are divided into four distinct outdoor zones named after global regions: Asia, South America, Africa, and Oceania, each spotlighting exotic flora, winding walking trails, and Disney character totems. If you've ever stayed at Disney's Wilderness Lodge or Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge in Orlando, you'll feel right at home here.
Disney’s Hollywood Hotel, on the other hand, embraces vintage Tinseltown glamour. Following an extensive property-wide refurbishment, the hotel blends sleek mid-century Art Deco architecture with contemporary Disney touches. The lobby has shiny "marble" floors, metallic bronze trim, cinematic murals, and character-driven modern art. It also smells amazing!
The gardens are themed after famous Los Angeles streets, complete with vintage classic American motorcars and the iconic "Hollywood Hotel" outdoor marquee sign. It's lively, playful, and distinctly Disney. If you're a fan of Disney's All Star Movies Resort at WDW, you'll love it. It's like they've taken that concept and made it ultra premium.
Rooms & Accommodation Comparison
When comparing guest rooms, the decision really comes down to spacious, subtle rustic elegance vs sleek, brand-new pop culture character design.
Disney Explorers Lodge Rooms
- Asia Wing: "Hathi Jr." Garden's tropical, Polynesian surroundings.
- Oceania Wing: "Little Squirt" garden, featuring beach and coastal theming.
- South America Wing: "Kevin" garden, with vibrant rainforest landscaping.
- Africa Wing: "African Savannah". Very reminiscent of Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge's exterior.
Disney’s Hollywood Hotel Rooms
- Mickey and Friends Rooms: Bright, cheerful Art Deco aesthetic featuring bold line-art murals of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy against golden cinematic backgrounds. I thought these were the perfect crossover between modern and characterful.
- Marvel Rooms: A massive hit with comic book fans. These feature striking, stylised pop-art headboard murals of Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Captain America, and Thor, paired with sleek high-tech accents.
💡The Mouse Observer Tip: Bear in mind that due to Hong Kong's environmental single-use plastic regulations, hotels no longer supply complimentary disposable plastic toiletries (such as toothbrushes, razors, or plastic-bottled combs) free in the rooms. High-quality reusable amenity boxes are available to purchase from the front desk upon check-in if you forget your own, but we strongly suggest packing your own kit in your hand luggage. There's also a water dispenser in the room.
Dining: Which Hotel Offers Better Food?
Both properties offer a good selection of meals, but Hollywood Hotel is a bit lacking for quick service food in comparison:
Explorers Lodge Dining Options
- Dragon Wind: Elegant Chinese table service dining, serving Cantonese delicacies and dim sum amidst intricate kites and traditional Chinese design.
- World of Color Restaurant: A vibrant fusion eatery showcasing culinary styles from Central America, the Mediterranean, and Asia. It also serves fantastic plant-based curries and noodles.
- Chart Room Cafe: The main quick-service hub, offering fresh pastries, barista coffees, Mickey gelatos, grab-and-go salads, and hot meals. Hollywood Hotel doesn't really offer an equivalent.
- Dreamer's Lookout: Cocktails, whiskies, and teas overlooking the gardens.
Disney’s Hollywood Hotel Choices
- Ink & Plate: A colourful and lively all-day buffet celebrating Disney ink-and-paint artists, where chefs cook across open stations surrounded by colourful animator concept sketches. If you just want a quick bite or aren't a buffet fan, unfortunately you have limited options.
- The Archivist: A must-visit speakeasy-style cocktail and small-plates lounge. Packed with cinematic Marvel film props and classic studio lore, it is one of the coolest evening hangout spots on Disney property. However, food is mainly tapas style, and it's not quick counter service like Chart Room Cafe at Explorers Lodge.
How to Book Disney's Hollywood Hotel or Disney Explorers Lodge From the UK
- Choose Your Resort Base: Decide between the spacious botanical gardens and ocean-view trails of Disney Explorers Lodge, or the budget-friendly, freshly refurbished Art Deco wings (with Marvel or Mickey & Friends theming) at Disney’s Hollywood Hotel.
- Compare Across the Big Three Platforms: Check prices in GBP for your exact travel dates across Klook, Trip.com, and Booking.com. Look out for ticket bundle deals or seasonal voucher codes.
- Watch Currency Conversion & Hidden Fees: Booking directly through Hong Kong Disneyland charges in Hong Kong Dollars (HKD), so use a fee-free UK travel card to avoid bank surcharges. Both Klook and Trip.com let you lock in pricing and pay directly in British Pounds (GBP).
- Secure Theme Park Tickets & Passes: Reserve your 1-Day or 2-Day dated park admission tickets in advance online (either in GBP through Klook or via the official Disney portal in HKD) so they're ready to link to your account.
- Download the Official Hong Kong Disneyland App: Create your Disney account and link your hotel reservation and tickets. The app is essential for monitoring live ride wait times, checking entertainment times, grabbing Disney Premier Access, and placing mobile food orders.
- Get an eSIM: Download an eSIM (like Airalo or Saily) just before you travel so you can access your booking & tickets via the app, and stay connected once you arrive at the hotel.
The Verdict: Disney's Hollywood Hotel vs Explorers Lodge
I absolutely loved both hotels, but if I had to pick one alone it would Disney's Hollywood Hotel based on value for money.
If your budget easily permits the slight £30–£60 nightly increase and you're fussy with food, Disney Explorers Lodge may suit you better. The expansive 4-wing botanical gardens, ocean-front walking trails, massive atrium lobby, and diverse dining lineup deliver true "Disney bubble" luxury. Both have shuttle connections to the park, or a brisk walk along the promenade (where you'll spy the abandoned ferry pier).
However, if you're watching the budget or travelling with die-hard Marvel enthusiasts, Disney’s Hollywood Hotel is exceptional value. Its recently completed modern refurbishment means the rooms feel fresh and vibrant, the Art Deco aesthetic is stunning, and an evening cocktail at The Archivist is not to be missed.
