Toy Story Hotel Shanghai Disneyland Honest Review: Worth It?

Toy Story Hotel at Shanghai Disneyland
Shanghai Disneyland Resort boasts two official on-site accommodations: the grand Art Nouveau-inspired Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and the playful, value-conscious Toy Story Hotel. With giant Buzz Lightyear and Woody statues towering over landscaped courtyards and classic Pixar cloud wallpaper in the rooms, it promises the Disney bubble for less (while still relatively pricey for Shanghai).

Does it live up to the hype, or does it feel like a glorified value resort with a premium price tag attached? In this honest review, I look at the rooms, amenities, dining, and logistics to help you decide whether it's worth it.

⚡ Key Takeaways:
  • The Vibe: Vibrant, Toy Story Pixar theming built around two large courtyards (Woody Courtyard and Buzz Lightyear Courtyard). Perfect for families and animation lovers.
  • Pricing: Typically sits around ¥1,100–¥2,000 (~£120–£220) per night, making it roughly half the price of the Shanghai Disneyland Hotel.
  • Top Perk: Guaranteed early park entry via the dedicated Disneytown hotel entrance, letting you beat the enormous main gate security crush.
  • The Drawbacks: Firm mattresses, basic quick-service dining, chaotic check-in, and no swimming pool on the property.

Arrival & First Impressions

From the moment my DiDi taxi dropped me off at the resort's entrance, there was no mistaking where I was. The hotel's exterior has a sleek glass design with Toy Story clouds, and colourful blocks with a sweeping canopy.

Inside the lobby, everything from the check-in counters to the ceiling is vibrantly themed, with sketches of Woody, Buzz, and the gang adorning the walls. The hotel is split into two sweeping wings shaped in an infinity sign (an intentional nod to both Buzz Lightyear's catchphrase and Chinese numerology for good fortune): the Woody Wing and the Buzz Lightyear Wing. Character decor can be seen all around you.

Check-in was unfortunately very chaotic and not particularly fast, though we did arrive bang on check-in time. Cast Members' English language proficiency can vary compared to Hong Kong or Tokyo, so make sure you have a translation app and eSIM (like Airalo or Saily) ready. Have your passports and booking confirmations clearly accessible on your phone or in print. The staff will link your hotel stay directly to your Shanghai Disney Resort app, which is critical for securing your early entry perks and ticket access the following morning.

The Cast Member checking us in acknowledged my birthday and gave me a badge, which was a nice touch.

Some of the exterior areas do look a bit vacant and empty in comparison to the Tokyo version of this hotel. While still pleasant, I think they could have done with more seating areas, covered areas, and landscaping outside.

The Rooms: Theming vs Comfort

If you love old-school playful Disney details, the rooms are an absolute joy. I stayed in a Woody-themed room, which is arguably the more "subtle" of the two types of room. However, if you're looking for understated, plush Disney luxury, you'll need to manage your expectations.

Decor & Details

The carpets feature very maximalist, colourful Woody and Buzz motifs that are slightly different depending on whether you have a Buzz or Woody room. The bed runners are themed to either all the Toy Story characters in Woody rooms, or Little Green Men in Buzz rooms (Buzz rooms also get Little Green Men pillows). There's no shortage of Little Green Men in the Woody rooms if you look carefully above the curtains!

In the Woody rooms, the table lamp has a wonderful Slinky Dog design which you'd be forgiven for overlooking given how busy the rest of the room is.

The bedside table is a Rubik's cube, with USB/USB-C points, as well as A, B, C and I-type sockets. Note that are are no UK-compatible sockets. You'll find amenities like a themed notepad and pen, as well as an alarm clock.

By the large TV are tea and coffee facilities, so you won't miss out on your morning brew. You're also given 4 bottles of water every day, which is essential in China. I really appreciated this as it saves having to walk to the shop. I can't remember the last time (if ever) I saw themed resort mugs in a Disney room. And no, you can't keep them!

Other freebies we had in the room were slippers (replenished every day), a bag, and luggage tags. The slippers are both Woody and Buzz themed, so you'll get the same regardless of room type. They run on the smaller side.

The TV doesn't have many western channels, but has several on-demand Disney movies available (you don't have to watch more Toy Story!).

Room Layout

Standard rooms are configured with two double beds and can accommodate up to two adults and two children under 12. They're noticeably more spacious than standard city hotel rooms in Tokyo or Hong Kong, providing ample floor space to open two full-size suitcases without tripping over them.

The Mattress Situation

Here is an honest warning for Western travellers: the mattresses are distinctly firm. Traditional Chinese hotel bedding tends to be much firmer than what UK or US guests are used to at European or American Disney resorts. If you prefer a soft, cloud-like mattress, you will certainly notice the stiffness after walking 25,000 steps around the park. Personally, I like a firm mattress. But if you're expecting something similar to Disney World beds, you'll be in for a surprise.

Bathroom & Amenities

The bathroom features a modern shower/tub combo, decent water pressure, and a generous vanity area. Theming will be (you guessed it) either Buzz or Woody depending on the room type, with (slightly odd-looking) Woody and Jessie sketches on the curtain, or more Little Green Men. A small accent around the mirror is the only other noticeable difference.

💡The Mouse Observer Tip: When booking, you can choose between Courtyard View and Garden View. Courtyard View looks directly over the oversized Woody or Buzz character figures in the centre gardens. It's well worth the extra for the view, especially when lit up at night!

How to Book Toy Story Hotel at Shanghai Disneyland From the UK

  1. Choose Your Platform: Compare live rates in GBP between Trip.com (usually best price/allocation), Klook, Booking.com, or Disney Direct (RMB only).
  2. Select Your View Type: Choose between Garden View or Courtyard View (Courtyard overlooks the oversized Woody or Buzz statues and is well worth the small extra cost).
  3. Input Exact Passport Details: Enter every guest's full legal name and passport number exactly as they appear on your physical passport to prevent check-in delays in China.
  4. Download the Shanghai Disney Resort App: Set up your Disney account on your smartphone before departure. Make sure you have an eSIM ready (like Airalo or Saily) so you can stay connected when you arrive.
  5. Link Your Reservation: If booked direct, your room links automatically. If booked via Trip.com, Klook, or Booking.com, keep your confirmation voucher handy — Cast Members will link it immediately to your app at the front desk.
  6. Buy Your Theme Park Tickets: Link your park passes to the same app account to unlock early entry through the Disneytown turnstiles. You can buy your tickets in GBP via Klook or Trip.com.
  7. Carry Your Physical Passports: Chinese hospitality laws require physical passport scans at front desk check-in. Digital photos or photocopies are strictly not accepted.

💡The Mouse Observer Tip: If you're booking direct via the official Shanghai Disney Resort website or app, use a credit card with zero foreign transaction fees. Because billing is processed in Chinese Yuan (CNY), high street UK bank cards will slap you with an unnecessary 3% conversion fee.

Dining & Amenities: What’s on Site?

Sunnyside Cafe Shanghai vegan meal
The dining at Toy Story Hotel is functional and quick rather than destination-worthy. Unlike the Shanghai Disneyland Hotel — which houses upscale table service like Lumière’s Kitchen and Aurora — Toy Story Hotel focuses on casual food:
  • Sunnyside Café: A food court-style food hall divided into stalls themed after Chinese kites featuring Toy Story characters. Stations serve a mix of Chinese classics (dumplings, noodle bowls, braised pork rice) and Western staples (baked pasta, chicken tenders, burgers). It's OK and efficient, but it isn't fine dining and I personally struggled with the limited vegan options.
  • Sunnyside Market: A grab-and-go shop near the lobby serving quick pastries, branded cupcakes, pre-packed sandwiches, fresh fruit, coffee, and soft drinks. It's the ideal spot to grab a bite before early entry.
  • Lotso Shop: The hotel's gift shop is packed with park essentials, exclusive merchandise, pins, and plenty of plushies. It's far less crowded than the flagship World of Disney store in Disneytown.
  • Amenities Note: There is no swimming pool and no fitness gym at Toy Story Hotel. If an afternoon dip or gym workout is essential to your Disney holiday, you'll need to upgrade to the Shanghai Disneyland Hotel. Outside, children can play in the water play area (The Launchpad) during warmer summer months.

The Real Reason to Stay: Early Park Entry & Disneytown Access

Buzz statue at Toy Story Hotel Shanghai Disney
Shanghai Disneyland draws colossal daily crowds. The security and ticket turnstiles at the main esplanade can back up into brutal queues stretching super far first thing in the morning.

Staying at Toy Story Hotel completely bypasses this headache:
  • Dedicated Disneytown Entrance: Hotel guests gain access to Shanghai Disneyland via a private resort entrance located within Disneytown. The security queue here is vastly shorter than the main gate.
  • Early Entry Window: You receive entry into the theme park up to 60 minutes before standard day guests. In that golden hour, you can walk straight onto headline attractions like Zootopia: Hot Pursuit or TRON Lightcycle Power Run before queues soar past two hours.
  • Getting to the Gates: You can catch the complimentary Disney resort shuttle bus (a 5-minute journey departing every 10–15 minutes) or it's a 10- to 15-minute walk through the landscaped walkways straight into Disneytown.

💡The Mouse Observer Tip: The bus drops you off at the Disneytown parking area in the morning, but it's a different location to get the bus back in the afternoon. You need to find the West Public Transportation Hub in Disneytown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Toy Story Hotel at Shanghai Disneyland?

Yes, Shanghai Disneyland features an official on-site Toy Story Hotel, which opened alongside the theme park in June 2016. There is also a Toy Story Hotel at Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan, which opened later in April 2022. Both hotels share similar bright Pixar aesthetics, though each features distinct dining options, room layouts, and courtyard designs.

Is the Toy Story Hotel worth the money?

Yes, Toy Story Hotel is widely considered the best value on-site stay at Shanghai Disney Resort. While the rooms feature firm beds and the dining is limited to casual quick-service, you receive the exact same early park entry privileges and priority Disneytown turnstile access as guests paying double at the Shanghai Disneyland Hotel. For visitors prioritising theme park touring over luxury amenities, it is easily worth the price.

Which Toy Story Hotel is better, Shanghai or Tokyo?

Tokyo's Toy Story Hotel is the superior property overall in terms of finish, interactive immersion, and dining. Tokyo features the popular Lotso Garden Cafe buffet, intricate courtyard play areas, and superior bed comfort. However, Shanghai's Toy Story Hotel offers larger rooms, cheaper nightly room rates, easier booking availability, and provides a much more significant touring advantage via Shanghai's dedicated early entry entrance.

Can you visit the Toy Story Hotel at Shanghai Disneyland if you're not staying there?

Yes, non-staying guests can generally visit the public areas of Toy Story Hotel at Shanghai Disneyland. Visitors can explore the lobby, browse the Lotso Shop, dine at the Sunnyside Café, and see the courtyards. However, during high-demand holiday dates or peak crowd periods, Disney security may restrict hotel access and shuttle transit strictly to guests with confirmed room or dining reservations.

Where is the Toy Story Hotel at Shanghai Disneyland?

The Toy Story Hotel is located inside the Shanghai Disney Resort perimeter in Pudong, Shanghai, situated just west of the theme park at 360 Shendi West Road. It sits approximately a 10- to 15-minute signposted walk or a 5-minute complimentary resort shuttle bus ride from the Disneytown entertainment district and the theme park turnstiles.
